Tracking your life, for the sake of tracking.

After a long while since my last post, once I again I look for refugee in here. I’ve been running a bit, aside from my main workouts, I thought it would be a fun idea to join a popular running club to meet people, socialize a bit and also get some fresh air every Sunday morning. So far, It has been good, I join very occasionally tho.

Wrong: If it’s not in Strava doesn’t count.

And the last time I went for a run I saw how a lot of people are quite obsessed with Strava. For those of you that might have read some of my post at this point will know that I try to be a minimalist, and recently I’ve been trying to stay away more and more from my phone and social media.

Imagine when I saw, people just worried that their progress has not been tracked in that app. Is it good to track your own progress? Yes, it gives you perspective, and will help you out improve. But let’s be honest, 90% of us are not going to compete. We are not professional athletes that need the best equipment possible.

I’m not saying that tracking at least how long are you running is bad, but the urge of publishing it, of showing to the world (or the group of people following you) how long did you run, for the sake of getting approval from the group, that’s where I think things go wrong.

We keep using more apps on our daily life, some of which their utility beyond making us control freaks is all they can offer.

How well does your watch you slept last night?

Another example that I saw, which made my laugh, was a group of people after the run comparing their sleep quality. This watches can also track your sleep and how long have you been in REM phase…etc

And they looked at my to see if I was also going to share that with them. But I don’t have those watches, and I don’t track that. I simply said “I can tell how well I slept the night before when I wake up, I don’t need a watch for that” and we had a laugh.

But it is true, why do we need to have that app also tracking our sleep. We just add unnecessary clutter in our life.

So go to the gym, and leave your phone in your locker. Go for a run, for the sake of going for a run, leave your phone at home. Experience life at its fullest. Get out of the Matrix.
