The environment and its influence

environment

Most animals have some sort of relationship with their surroundings. Which makes sense right? Their survival depends on it.

Some mammals will hoard food to survive the winter, while others will try to eat as much as they can so they are able to hibernate.

The environment influences their behaviour.

Why should that be different for us? We have reached (in certain societies) such a comfort level that we do not have to worry about those things anymore. But the environment still has an effect on our psyche.

This made me think

Our mental state is also dependent on our environment.

I’ve been in a “salary/money-focused” environment lately. At my work people are not happy with their salaries because of how inflation is skyrocketing. (I must include myself in that group).

So far, so good.

The issue is that people are constantly talking about salaries or money: some are spending money for no reason, others showing off for getting paid a lot for some side job, or how much other people are making in other companies.

Which makes it seem that all my surroundings are just obsessed with money. And if I am already worried about it, if everyone around me is obsessed, I go into a thought spiral where I can’t stop thinking about it.

I like living my life below my possibilities, it gives me tranquillity. And it stops me from going into the loophole of getting more money to spend more money on a bigger house or on a bigger car, or whatever non-justified expense.

Do I have to ignore what is happening and not care about money? No. We have to be realistic. But should I allow my environment to bother me constantly? Absolutely not.

Whenever someone brings up the money talk. I politely ask them to change the subject. And I don’t mean when a friend wants to talk about it because he/she needs it. No, I mean those people that just talk about it for the sake of complaining or talking.
